A warm welcome to the Purple Aprons!!

I am so excited about starting school!  I hope you are too!!  My name is Susan Nicholson and this is my 6th year teaching at Upland First United Methodist Preschool. I am happy to be leading the “Purple PreK PM Class”!! We are delighted to continue our expanded, afternoon program consisting of three days a week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  In previous school years, children have really enjoyed coming to school three days in a row. I have worked in Early Childhood Education for the past 18 years. I am trained in Handwriting Without Tears, (which has since changed its name to Learning Without Tears) and am a past member of the Early Childhood Education Advisory Committee at Citrus College. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband Mike for 32 years. We love spending time together riding our vintage beach cruisers at the beach, going to the movies, going to USC football games, walking our dog and taking trips on the weekends. We have a daughter who graduated from Occidental College in 2013 and went back to school in 2016 to get her PTA license. She has currently lived and worked in New Jersey for the past 5 years! Our son graduated from USC in 2016 and works as a designer/architect in Long Beach. Both of our children attended Upland First United Methodist Preschool when they were young! I truly believe that an exceptional preschool experience helps children succeed in school and in life. I love Pre K and can’t wait to get acquainted with you and your child in the weeks ahead.

My assistant is Mr. Joe Boccolucci.  He was our staff relief person for 2 years and this will be his second year as an assistant teacher in the PM class. We make a great team! His son Ethan attended FUMC Preschool and will be entering 3rd grade this fall.  Joe is originally from Buffalo, New York. Mr. Boccolucci is very happy and enthusiastic about working in the PM class!

We have so many fun things planned this year! Children learn through play and our curriculum will be based on play with a purpose. In the month of September, we will focus on getting acquainted with our room and each other.  We will establish routines, such as time for play, snack, and circle time, etc. During the coming weeks, we will learn to follow directions, learn classroom rules, playground rules, also begin the letter of the week activities and math readiness activities.  In September we will learn about our new friends and ourselves – how we are similar and what makes each of us special. ** PLEASE SEND IN A PHOTO OF YOUR FAMILY SO WE CAN HANG IT IN OUR “FAMILY TREE”. We will also explore apples in September using all of our senses.

Our daily schedule and weekly lesson plans are posted outside our classroom door. (Look for the PURPLE PM board J) Please take a minute to read this when you drop your child off in the afternoon.  This will tell you what activities are planned for each day.  This schedule will also help you understand and discuss your child’s activities at the end of each day.

Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 4th starting at 5:30 PM in our classroom and then continuing in Fellowship Hall with Mrs. Kerber at 6pm.  I hope you will be able to make it! This is an informative night where we will let you know more about our Preschool and our class and answer any questions you may have.

A Parent Participation Meeting will be held the following afternoon, Thursday, September 5th, at 1pm with Mrs. Kerber.  At this meeting you will be able to sign up to be a room parent, be in charge of our class aprons, check out library books for our class, and learn about many other opportunities in which you can earn those parent participation hours. Thank you in advance for supporting our classroom and our preschool!

Reminder:  Please send a complete change of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) for your child with their name clearly marked on each piece of clothing the first week of school. Place clothes in a gallon size Ziploc bag, labeled with their name.  Your child will keep them in their cubby in case of unplanned spills, muddy clothes, etc.

Dropping Off Your Child:  I will greet each child and put on their purple apron and name tag as they arrive at school each day. Please wait outside the classroom until I am finished with the child ahead of you. Also, please have your child leave toys from home, at home. We will begin a weekly sharing day in a couple weeks. At this time your child is welcome to bring one item/ toy from home to share (talk about) and we are especially looking for items that begin with the letter of the week. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you ever need to reach me after school hours, please leave a message on the school phone (909)985-0255 or email me at preschool.fumc@verizon.net, ATTN:  Mrs. Nicholson. I will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours. Otherwise I am always available to talk about or listen to ANY concerns you may have before or after regular school days.  Mr. Boccolucci and I look forward to a fun and exciting year ahead!!

Love and hugs to all our new and returning purple aprons,

Mrs. Nicholson and Mr. Boccolucci
